Author Guidelines

The journal's editorial policy is guided by the principles of publication integrity in scientific journals, in accordance with the guidelines of authoritative international associations such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Council of Science Editors (CSE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and the CSE’s White Paper on Promoting Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications, 2012 Update. These guidelines establish standards of ethical conduct for all parties involved in the publication process (authors, journal editors, reviewers, publishers, and the scientific community).

The general medical scientific-practical journal "V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology" is a regular peer-reviewed print publication that reflects reliable research findings in the fields of psychiatry, psychotherapy, addiction medicine, and medical psychology, conducted in accordance with the principles of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM).

Materials intended for publication must meet the following criteria:

• Scientific relevance and significance of the research problem (the content and subject matter of the article must be of interest and value to a broad range of specialists and researchers in the medical fields listed by the journal's editorial board).
• High level of evidence (this implies the use of a contemporary research foundation, adequate sample sizes, and appropriate methods for the statistical analysis of the research results).
• Conceptual approach to research (authors should not limit themselves to merely stating facts; a thorough analysis of the obtained data is required, taking into account existing literature, and new ideas and hypotheses must be proposed).

Aims and Scope of the Journal (Journal Description)

The primary objectives of the journal are to synthesize scientific and practical advancements in psychiatry, addiction medicine, medical psychology, psychotherapy, and related specialties, and to enhance the scientific and practical expertise of professionals working in mental health care.

The journal accepts for publication original research and problem-focused articles, literature reviews, case reports (featuring a minimum of three clinical cases per article), brief communications, and discussion papers.

The journal invites submissions from both domestic and international researchers, physicians, and psychologists working in mental health care, as well as experts in related disciplines. Additionally, the journal publishes resolutions and proceedings from major Russian and international congresses, along with historical facts and studies in psychiatry, addiction medicine, psychotherapy, and medical psychology, provided that the authors establish a well-justified contemporary relevance for these historical topics.

Pre-submission Guidelines for Authors

Submission of an article to the V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology must comply with the following requirements:

• The manuscript must be submitted electronically via the online submission system on the journal's website in .doc or .docx format. It must align with the journal's thematic sections, scope, and these specific requirements.
• The article must be written in Russian*, using Times New Roman font, size 12, with 1.5 line spacing.
• The article must not have been previously published in another journal. Only original, unpublished materials that do not infringe upon the copyrights of others are considered*. All articles are screened using the "Antiplagiat" plagiarism detection system; the text originality must be at least 70%.
• The article must not be under consideration by any other journal. If similar texts by the same author are identified in other print or electronic publications, the manuscript will be rejected.
• The article must be accompanied by an official referral letter** from the institution where the work was conducted (at least one referral letter is required if the article is submitted by multiple institutions). For works carried out on the author's personal initiative (unaffiliated with an institution), a signed letter from the author requesting publication must be attached.
• Authors bear full responsibility for the content of the article, including any text and images generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as for the accurate citation of related materials. The use of AI is strictly prohibited for: generating scientific ideas, hypotheses, or theories; formulating the conclusions of the research/article; or creating or altering original data and research results. The use of AI tools must be explicitly disclosed in the abstract and in the "Materials and Methods" section of the article. For graphical materials, a brief description of AI use must be included in the figure caption.
• The manuscript must not be a fragment of a single study artificially divided into multiple papers (publications involving "salami slicing" will not be considered by the editorial board).
• All co-authors must agree to the publication of the current version of the article.
• At the end of the article, the following information must be provided for each author: full name, academic degree and title, other official state honors/distinctions, position, and the full name of the institution(s) along with its complete postal address where the author is employed, and a valid email address. No other information should be included.

* Manuscripts that violate publication ethics standards—for example, in cases of duplicate publications (when authors present the same data in multiple publications), plagiarism, or undisclosed conflicts of interest that could have influenced the interpretation of the data or recommendations for their use—may be retracted after publication, in accordance with the recommendations of the Ethics Council of the Association of Science Editors and Publishers (ASEP).

** The submission cover letter must contain the following information: a formal request to the editorial board of the V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology to consider the submitted material for publication in the journal; a complete list of authors and the title of the manuscript; a statement declaring that the manuscript has not been previously published and is not currently under consideration by any other publications; and a confirmation of consent from all authors for its publication. The authors of the article bear full responsibility for the accuracy and truthfulness of this information.

Article Formatting Guidelines

1. The title page of the article must include the following (in both Russian and English): the article title; authors' surnames and initials; authors' affiliations; the article abstract; author information: full name of each author, email address, and ORCID iD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) https://orcid.org (see the example of the first page formatting below); article citation information; conflict of interest information; and corresponding author information.

Article Title. The Russian title must accurately reflect the content of the article. The English title must be grammatically correct and fully correspond in meaning to the Russian title.

Authors are individuals identified by the research team as the main contributors to the presented work who have agreed to take responsibility for all its aspects. The V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology accepts the following criteria for authorship:

• Substantial contributions to the conception and design of the study, data acquisition, or data analysis and interpretation.
• Drafting the article or critically revising it for important intellectual content.
• Final approval of the version to be published.

Individuals who do not meet the criteria for authorship should not be included in the author list. Names of individuals who provided support but are not authors should be listed in the "Acknowledgements" section at the end of the article.

When listing authors, the surname should precede the initials of the first name and patronymic (e.g., Ivanov I.I., Petrov A.S.). English surnames must match the international passport or how they were listed in previously published articles. In the English section of the title page, authors should be listed in the format "First Name Initial. Surname" (e.g., Ivan I. Ivanov). If an author does not have an international passport or prior publications, the BSI standard must be used for the transliteration of the surname and first name.

Author Affiliation(s). Authors must list all workplaces relevant to the conduct of the research. If co-authors represent more than one institution, a numerical superscript footnote must be placed next to each author's name, indicating their affiliation(s); identical footnotes must be provided in the Russian and English abstracts. Please note that the official English name of the institution must be used in the English title page, not a free translation by the author. Abstract and Keywords. An abstract of the work must be provided in both Russian and English before the main text. The recommended length of a structured abstract is 200–250 words. The abstract must contain the following sections: Objective, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusion (main findings). The abstract should not include newly introduced terms, abbreviations (except for universally known ones), or references to the literature. All abbreviations in the abstract must be spelled out (even if they are spelled out in the main text). The abstract text must be cohesive, using transitional words such as "therefore," "for example," "as a result," etc.

Keywords: 5–7 words related to the article's topic should be placed below the abstract after the heading "Keywords." Keywords must use terms from the article text that define the subject area and facilitate indexing in search engines, and they must not repeat the article title. Ideally, keywords should complement the abstract and title. For selecting English keywords, the US National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus can be used.

Conflict of Interest. A conflict of interest exists when individuals have competing or conflicting interests that could influence editorial decision-making. Conflicts of interest can be potential, perceived, or actual. Objectivity may be influenced by personal, political, financial, scientific, or religious factors. The author is obliged to notify the editor and readers of any actual or potential conflict of interest. If there is no conflict of interest, the author must also state this after the main text of the article (before the reference list). Example wording: "The author declares no conflict of interest." This section must also disclose all sources of funding for the manuscript.

2. Article Text.

The final length of the manuscript, including the reference list, tables, and figures, is:

• for a problem-oriented article: up to 23 pages
• for a review article: up to 28 pages
• for an original research article: up to 18 pages
• for other types of publications: up to 8 pages

All abbreviations (except universally accepted ones) must be spelled out upon first mention. In articles containing results of clinical studies involving patients or healthy volunteers, it is mandatory to state the presence of signed informed consent and approval from the local ethics committee (specify the exact name). Publication of manuscripts describing clinical cases is only possible as case series (minimum of 3 cases) and requires high clinical and scientific significance.

The journal adopts the following structure for original articles:

• Introduction
• Materials and Methods
• Results
• Discussion
• Conclusion

Introduction. This section describes the rationale for the study's relevance and formulates the study objective.

• Rationale (Justification): A brief (1–3 sentences) description of the problem that directly prompted the research. Characteristics of the problem may include its scale, indirect effects, and/or persistent knowledge gaps.
• Objective: This section must describe the main (primary) objective of the study or the research question whose resolution required the study. The objective must be highly specific and not reduced to a general comparison of "everything with everything."

Materials and Methods. This section begins with a description of the study design and must contain brief information on:

• Study subjects (healthy individuals, patients, data),
• Presence of a control group,
• Inclusion, non-inclusion, and exclusion criteria for the compared groups,
• Presence and characteristics of the intervention,
• Study setting,
• Study duration,
• Outcomes (parameters for evaluating the study result corresponding to its main objective),
• Description of outcome assessment methods.

The editorial board of the V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology recommends (but does not mandate) that authors use the following checklists and frameworks developed by international healthcare organizations (EQUATOR Network: Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research) when preparing original articles and other materials:

• For randomized clinical trials: "CONSORT 2010 checklist of information to include when reporting a randomized trial".
• For non-experimental studies: "The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Statement: guidelines for reporting observational studies".
• For systematic reviews: "PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)".
• For clinical case reports: "The CARE Guidelines: Consensus-based Clinical Case Reporting Guideline Development".
• For qualitative research: "SRQR (Standards for reporting qualitative research)".
• For prognostic/diagnostic accuracy studies: "STARD 2015: An Updated List of Essential Items for Reporting Diagnostic Accuracy Studies".

The use of statistical terms such as "randomized," "significant," "correlation," and "sample" to denote non-statistical concepts must be avoided. Manuscripts where the study design does not align with its objectives and tasks may be rejected by the editorial board. It is necessary to specify which software programs were used and which statistical methods were applied to justify the conclusions drawn. Sufficient explanatory detail must be provided for all statistical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used. For example, M = sample mean; m = standard error of the mean; σ = standard deviation; p = achieved level of significance, etc. If the statistical criteria used have application limitations, it must be stated how these limitations were checked and what the results of the checks were. The precision of calculated results must match the precision of the measurement methods used. Mean values should not be presented with more than one decimal place beyond the precision of the raw data. It is recommended to round measurement results (means and variability indices) to the same number of decimal places, as varying numbers of decimal places may be interpreted as differing measurement precision. Instead of the phrase "statistical reliability," the phrase "statistical significance" should be used, along with the obtained level of significance.

Before the study begins, a design must be developed, and an analysis of published articles must be conducted, based on which the sample size calculation and a statistical analysis plan are formulated. The plan should detail the methods of data preparation, analysis, and presentation of results. The results of the statistical analysis must describe in detail:

• Participant flow data (CONSORT flow diagram): number of participants not included in the study (with reasons); number included (screened, randomized – if applicable); number of participants who received treatment within the study (if applicable); number of participants who completed the study per protocol; number of participants included in the statistical analysis; and other participant subgroups, if applicable.
• Presentation of demographic, clinical, and other baseline characteristics of the study participants.
• Methods of analyzing study endpoints: statistical tests used, significance level, adjustments for multiple comparisons (if applicable), and statistical characteristics of efficacy measures.
• Safety data, including adverse events and other safety outcomes of special interest, if applicable.
• Data on concomitant therapy, including therapies of special interest (if applicable).

Data analysis must be conducted in strict accordance with the pre-agreed statistical analysis plan. Any deviations from the planned analysis must be justified and described in detail.

Results. This section must contain a brief description of the study subjects (number included, number who completed the study, most essential participant characteristics) along with an evaluation of study outcomes related to its objective. The results should be presented in a logical sequence in the form of text, tables, or figures (graphs, charts). Repetition of data from tables or figures in the text should be avoided; only important observations should be highlighted or summarized. Graphs are recommended as an alternative to tables with large amounts of data. It is recommended to indicate the confidence interval or standard deviation on graphs and charts. Graphs must have labels, axis markings, and units of measurement.

Discussion. This section includes a description of new and important aspects of the study results, and the analysis and interpretation of the obtained data in comparison with similar or related data from other researchers. The inclusion of justified practical clinical recommendations and the potential future application of the results is permitted. When studying the efficacy of medical interventions, the criterion for efficacy must be specified. When studying diagnostic tests, the calculated sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic method and its comparison with a gold standard (if available) must be provided. In review articles, it is recommended to describe the search methods, depth of the literature search, and inclusion criteria for the materials reviewed.

Conclusion. This section presents the results of solving the research problem stated in the title and the objective of the article, formulated as conclusions. The conclusions of the work must be supported by the results of the statistical analysis conducted.

3. Formatting of Tables, Illustrative Materials, and Footnotes. Figures. Figures must be of high quality, suitable for printing, and must be presented in black-and-white format. All figures must have captions. Figure captions must be provided in both Russian and English. Figures are numbered with Arabic numerals in the order they appear in the text. If there is only one figure in the text, it is not numbered. References to figures are formatted as follows: "Figure 3 shows that..." or "It is shown that... (see Fig. 3)." The figure caption includes the figure number and its title. It should be centered: "Fig. 2. Description of vital processes." No period is placed after the figure caption. The English translation of the caption should be placed immediately after the Russian caption.

Tables. Tables must be of high quality and suitable for printing. Editable tables are preferred over scanned images or figures. All tables must have headings. The table heading includes the table number and its title. Table headings must accurately reflect the content of the columns, and all numerical data must match the figures in the article text. Tables should not completely duplicate numerical data already provided in the text. The table title must be translated into English. Table footnotes must be provided in both Russian and English. The English translation of the footnotes should follow the Russian text. Tables are numbered with Arabic numerals in the order they appear in the text. If there is only one table, it is not numbered. References to tables are formatted as follows: "Table 3 shows that..." or "It is shown that... (see Table 3)." It should be centered: "Table 2. Description of vital processes." No period is placed after the table heading. The English translation of the heading should be placed immediately after the Russian heading.

Screenshots and Photographs. For photographs, screenshots, and other non-drawn illustrations, the image resolution must be >300 dpi. Materials must be presented in black-and-white format. Image files must be named according to the figure number in the text. In the file description, the figure caption must be provided separately, which must correspond to the title of the photograph placed in the text. The total number of tables, figures, and graphs in a problem-oriented or original research article must not exceed seven.

Footnotes. Footnotes are numbered with Arabic numerals and placed at the bottom of the page. Footnotes may contain: references to anonymous internet sources, textbooks, study guides, GOSTs (state standards), statistical reports, articles in socio-political newspapers and magazines, abstracts, dissertations (if it is not possible to cite articles published based on the dissertation research), and author's comments.

4. Reference List. A reference list follows the article text. References to unpublished works are not permitted. The reference number in the article text must be enclosed in square brackets and correspond to the numbering in the reference list. In the reference list, authors are listed in alphabetical order (sources published in Russian are listed first, followed by foreign works). Bibliographic references in the article text are given in square brackets according to the reference list numbering. According to the rules considering the requirements of international citation systems like Web of Science and Scopus, non-English reference lists must be provided not only in the original language but also transliterated into Latin script. The English-language part of the bibliographic description must immediately follow the Russian-language part, starting on a new line. For example:

Please note that in the English version of the article title, periods are not placed after the authors' initials, whereas in the transliterated Russian version, periods after initials are retained. At the very end of the English bibliographic description, an indication of the original language of publication is placed in parentheses. References to foreign sources remain unchanged.

Journal Articles. The surnames and initials of all authors in Latin script and the article title in English should be provided exactly as they appear in the original publication. This is followed by the name of the Russian-language journal transliterated according to the BSI standard, followed by the publication details: year, volume, issue, and pages. The language of publication is placed in parentheses (In Russ.). At the end of the bibliographic description, the article DOI is included, if available. If there are many authors, it is permissible to list the first six followed by "et al." (listing all authors is possible, but no more than ten). For example (see also the three examples above):

It is undesirable to include abstracts, dissertations, textbooks, study guides, GOSTs, website information, statistical reports, articles in socio-political newspapers, websites, and blogs in the reference list. If it is necessary to refer to such information, the source details should be placed in a footnote. References to unpublished works are not permitted.

References to journal articles must necessarily include the year of publication, volume (if applicable), issue number, and page numbers. References must be verified; publication details should be checked on the official websites of the journals and/or publishers.

References to Internet Resources. The format for citing an internet resource is: Title of the material on the website [Website name]. Website name; Year [updated Month Day, Year; cited Month Day, Year]. Available at: http://www.example.ru Note: It is preferable to provide a direct link to the specific material on the website mentioned in the article. A link to the homepage is uninformative and does not allow for verification of the information.

5. Acknowledgements. This section acknowledges individuals who participated in the work on the article but do not meet the criteria for authorship. Participation in the work implies: providing recommendations for improving the research, providing research space, departmental oversight, obtaining financial support, conducting specific types of analysis, or providing reagents, patients, animals, or other materials for the research.

Interaction between the Journal and the Author. The date of article submission is considered the day the editorial office receives the final text. The editorial board's opinion may not coincide with the authors' opinion. There is no publication fee for manuscripts. In addition to the journal's website, the contents of the issues can be viewed on the website of the V.M. Bekhterev National Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology (www.bekhterev.ru) and the Russian Society of Psychiatrists (www.psychiatr.ru).

The editorial board only considers manuscripts that are formatted in full compliance with the Instructions for Authors. The editorial board reserves the right to edit the text upon detection of technical or semantic defects, or to return the article to the author for correction or shortening, including in cases of a significant number of grammatical errors.

All manuscripts submitted to the editorial office undergo mandatory peer review. Reviews are sent to the authors for making corrections and revising the text according to the reviewer's comments.

The journal's editorial board corresponds with the corresponding (contact) author; however, at the request of the author team, letters may be sent to all of them.

All articles submitted to the V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology undergo a preliminary check by the managing editor and the journal's technical service for compliance with formal requirements. At this stage, the article may be returned to the author(s) for revision with a request to correct errors or add missing data. Also, at this stage, the article may be rejected due to non-compliance with the journal's aims, lack of originality, or low scientific value.

After the preliminary check, the handling editor forwards the article to the primary reviewer(s) with specified review deadlines. The author receives a corresponding notification (on the journal's website, the author can track the "article status").

In controversial cases, the editor may involve several specialists and the editor-in-chief in the review process. Upon a positive reviewer's report, the article is passed to the editor for preparation for publication.

If a decision is made to revise the article, the reviewer's comments and remarks are transmitted to the author. The author is obliged to provide a revised version of the manuscript within no more than 15 days from the date the review was sent. If the author does not notify the editorial office of their planned actions within this period, the article is removed from the publication queue. The corrections made must be visible: either presented in "Track Changes/Review" mode or highlighted with color fill for the added text fragments.

If a decision is made to reject the article, a corresponding decision from the editorial board is sent to the author.

The Editorial Board's decision regarding the publication of an article is made at its discretion, is final, and is not subject to discussion.

The corresponding (contact) author of an accepted article is sent the final layout version, which they are obliged to check. A response is expected from the authors within 3 working days. In the absence of a response from the author, the article layout is considered approved.

Editors facilitate the resubmission of manuscripts that could potentially be accepted but were rejected due to the need for substantial revisions or the collection of additional data, and are ready to explain in detail what needs to be corrected in the manuscript for it to be accepted for publication.

Editorial Actions in Case of Plagiarism, Fabrication, or Falsification of Data. In the event of discovering misconduct by an author, plagiarism, fabrication, or falsification of data, the editorial board is guided by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines. By "misconduct," the V.M. Bekhterev Review of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology understands any actions by a scientist that include improper handling of study objects or intentional manipulation of scientific information, whereby it ceases to reflect the phenomena being studied, as well as behavior by a scientist that does not conform to accepted ethical and scientific standards. The journal does not classify honest errors or honest disagreements in the planning, execution, interpretation, or evaluation of research methods or results, or misconduct unrelated to the research process, as "misconduct."

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

1. This article has not been previously published, nor has it been submitted for consideration and publication in another journal (or an explanation is given in the Comments for the Editor section).

2. The file of the submitted article is in the format of the OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF or WordPerfect document.

3. The full Internet addresses (URLs) are provided for links wherever possible.

4. The text is printed with one and a half line spacing; Times  New Roman font size of 12 points is used; Italics are used for emphasis, not underscores (except for Internet addresses); all illustrations, graphs and tables are located in appropriate places in the text, and not at the end of the document.

5. The text complies with stylistic and bibliographic requirements described in the Guide for Authors, located on the page "About the Journal".

6. If you submit an article to the peer-reviewed section of the journal, then the requirements of the document for providing blind peer review are met.
